I'm trying to go from Paris to Austria but the plane fare that I've seen is outrageously expensive. The cheapest flights take over 10 hours! It doesn't matter what city in Austria I fly to as I intend to get a railpass once in Austria. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Maureen
You can fly SkyEurope, a budget airline, from Paris Orly to Vienna for as little as €59. It's a two-hour flight.
Not knowing your travel dates, a quick www.skyscanner.net search (assumed mid-week departure in July) shows Air Berlin at about $80 USD (59 Euros) one-way from CDG to VIE. Just under 2 hours. Perhaps this is another budget option to consider.
If you want a railpass for Austria, buy it now. I don't think you can buy one in Austria. However, point-to-point tickets may be cheaper than a pass, particularly if you buy Einfach-Raus-Tickets which allow up to five people to travel all day (after 09:00 on weekdays and anytime on weekends) on one ticket for €28. You are limited to regional trains so it will be slow going compared to the travel time for high-speed trains if you are traveling a long distance.
Have you looked at Easy Jet? When I was in Europe we flew with it two different times and it was VERY cheap. Our flights were only about an hour long though. We found, doing research on trains compared to Easy Jet that even with our railpasses, flying was cheaper.
Air Berlin has direct one-way flights at very reasonable fares from Paris to Vienna. Check the airline's website.
Thank you all for your very valuable suggestions. You've saved my vacation plans!
