Travel from Orvieto, Italy to Perugia

My husband and I want to go from Rome to Orvieto, Italy and then on to Perugia later that same day. We know about the train to Orvieto but are wondering about the second leg of the trip. What is the best means of getting to Perugia from Orvieto - bus or train? How do we find bus/train schedules with departure and arrival times for Orvieto to Perugia? We have looked a lot and haven't gotten real definite answers. Thanks for anyone's help.

There are trains departing Orvieto for Perugia about every 2 hours, with the last departure at around 8:45pm. Trip takes between 1:30 and 1:45, with a change in Trentola. You can check schedules at www.trenitalia.com. Use a date within 7 days to check prices.

You can easily seen the schedule on www.trenitalia.com. Numerous trains during the day. Most are Regionale trains. The fare is 7.10Euro and the trip usually just under 2hrs with one train change. If you are looking more than 7 days out, you can see the schedule but you will not be able to buy the ticket online. A Regionale train is like a bus on tracks. No seat reservations permitted. The trains will never sell out. If no seats, you can stand. But, they are normally not full. Just buy your ticket, validate it in the little yellow box in the station (newer ones are a different color), get on and find your own seat. To feel more comfortable about the ticket, you can buy it when you arrive in Orvieto. A ticket on a Regionale train is an "open" ticket that is good for 60 days. When you are ready to go to Perugia, just go out and hop on the next Regionale train.

The only time time that the trains to Perugia will be full is during the Chocolate Festival (October). That's what we found when we went: people squeezed everywhere they could fit!
