On DB I'm showing a 13 hr trip. 1. Is there any way to shorten this trip?
2. If not can you recommend a good stop over the the night to break up the trip?
Stephen, you don't say when you're going on this trip and if there's more than one train per day. If there are several, they may well have different routes through Germany. The webpage has an option of showing you all intermediate stops between Nuernberg and Leysin, including arrival time at and departure from each intermediate station. If you check this, you could pick a place for an overnight stay or else travel first class for such a long haul. The intermediate stops are called "Zwischenhaltestellen" in German (zwischen meaning between). Also, airberlin airlines fly from Nuernberg (Nuremberg) airport to three airports in Switzerland: Basel, Geneva and Zurich. Geneva is the closest. If you fly airberlin be aware of their luggage restrictions.
