I'm ending up in Nuremberg on October 1 and would like to travel to Prague. I understand that the train is perhaps the best method. Anyone have experience with this route?
Bill
Bill, if you use www.bahn.de, (you can choose english at the top), you can find what time the trains are running to Prague. I looked it up and it looks like they have direct trains every two hours that take about 3 1/2 hours. Should be a lovely train ride!
Actually, what Amy found is the Bahn intercity bus, that runs from Nuernberg Hbf every 2 hrs to Prague in 3½ hrs. Full fare on that bus is €48 (2nd cl). If you book 3-92 days in advance, you can get a non-refundable Europa-Special savings fare as low as €19. The rail option is one of four direct or one stop regional train connections per day that goes from Nuernberg via Schwandorf and Furth im Wald to Prague in 4-5 hrs. Using a Bayern-Boehmen ticket (€34 for up to five people), you can travel to Pilsen. From there you need a Czech rail ticket to Prague for about €6 per person. Unlike the Europa-Spezial bus ticket, you can buy the Bayern-Boehmen ticket up to the time of travel, and the price never goes up. So, you see, if you book far enough in advance, the bus is the best deal, but if not, take the train.
It is a bus that leave from right in front of the train station in Nuremburg and drops on the sidewalk in front of the old train station in Prague. Second class has the best seats on top. It is a smooth quick ride. We rode it last Christmas. It is operated by German Rail which is why Amy thought it was a train. But we have been on it.
Can anyone tell me if the bus is any issue with the roads in Dec? We will travel from Nuremberg to Prague Can you explain once more about the train and where we needo pick up in Nuremberg. I think I understand that I can buy this early. Also if we would choose a bus is it safe and where would our luggage go? Finally we need then to go from Prague to Munich. Can anyone help!
I can't speak for the bus. Maybe Frank has more info. The train leaves from one of the tracks in the Nuernberg Hbf at 6:00, 9:53, 14:05, and 17:53. You don't need to purchase the Bayern-Boehmen-Ticket in advance. There is no cost advantage. You can buy the Bayern-Boehmen-Ticket at the same price from an automat any time, even that morning, or you can buy it anytime in advance in Bavaria. Buy the ticket from Pilsen to Prague from the conductor in the Czech Republic.
Whoops! Thanks Lee for correcting me! I didn't even THINK to look at the mode of transport. I took for granted that it was a train. Too bad, though. I love taking non-stop train rides in Europe. So relaxing and sometimes pretty scenery...
It is a two level typical European bus. Of course, road conditions would effect the bus in the same way that a car would be. We took it on Dec 26 last year and it was snowing lightly all day. The roads were fine and it was a divided highway all the way to Prague. The luggage is stored in a area in the rear of the bus. There is no room for carryon if that is what you are asking. There is actual first and second class luggage storage. It is not as comfortable as a train but more than adequate. Second class is on top and actually has a better view that first class on the bottom. We went by train from Munich to Nuremburg and then the bus to Prague -- fastest way. You would do it in reverse if going to Munich.
Sorry, Amy. Two of the trains from Nuernberg, the ones at 6:00 and 14:05 are direct trains, 5 hours, no changes, from Nuernberg to Prague. Coming back, from Prague to Nuernberg, EX350, leaving at 5:02 and EX352, leaving at 13:02 are direct. The other two trains, EX354, leaving at 9:02, and EX356, at 17:02, have one dedicated change at Schwandorf. Again the trip to Nuernberg takes five hours. If you are going to be in Germany before your trip, you can buy the Bayern-Boehmen-Ticket there from an automat. If not, you can buy one from the Ticket-Shop, but it is in German. Lastly, you can buy a Bayern-Ticket (€29) from the Bahn website. That will take you from the Czech border to anywhere in Bavaria. Purchase the Czech tickets to the border (Furth im Wald) before you leave Prague for about €10 pP. Up date: I originally wrote "Pilsen". I meant to say to the Czech/Bavarian border. That's where the Bayern-Ticket becomes valid.
We are traveling from nuremberg to Prague and I think I have an understanding on the debahn site regarding it being a bus (i think 1053) and direct from the train station to the train station for 19 E 2nd class if booked 92 days prior However we then need to travel from Prague to Munich Am I correct in understanding I can book the entire trip on the same site for the return and it will be a bus to Nuremberg then a train to Munich and the total being 39 E if booked early Please correct me if I am incorrect
Thank you ahead!
I don't know about the price without personally checking, but there is the route. You can always take the train but it is slower.
Actually, the bus to Nuernberg and the train to Munich could be as low as €29 with advance purchase. However, all of this is based on getting the lowest advance purchase fare. If you wait too long and miss the fares, the regional trains are still the best deals, because they are always available at the same price.
