Travel from Munich to Salzburg - leaving next week!!

My grown children are flying to Munich and meeting us in Salzburg for the Christmas holidays. They want to ride the train from Munich to Salzburg using the Bayern ticket.
This is my question - can the Bayern ticket be purchased at the airport and used to also ride the S-Bahn into the city before changing trains to Salzburg? Or do they need to purchase a separate S-bahn ticket and purchase the Bayern ticket at the train station in Munich? I have researched this but can't seem to find the answer. Thanks for your help!

Yes, Bayern-Tickets are good on the S-Bahn. I expect that Lee from Denver will give you a more definitive answer; but according to a note I found on the Lonely Planet Thorntree board, ticket vending machines at the entrance to the S-Bahn station at the airport sell Bayern-Tickets.

Exactly right, Tim.

You can buy a Bayern-Ticket from the automat (I think it was actually on the platform) in the S-Bahn station. I bought one there last October, used it into the Hbf in Munich, then used it to Oberammergau.
