What is the best way to get to Interlaken from Munich. Can we take a sleeper? Are distination is Murren.
There's no night train. The fastest connection is Muinch to Zurich, Zurich to Bern, Bern to Interlaken. Travel time is about 6.5 hours. You can check schedule and book tickets at the German Rail site:
Marta,
I'd recommend travelling during the day on that route, as the scenery is fantastic!
You didn't indicate when you'd be travelling, so I used an arbitrary date to check the routes. If you don't mind getting up early, there's a train departing Munich Hbf at 07:12, arriving Interlaken Ost at 13:57 (time 6H:45M, 2 changes in Zurich and Bern, reservations compulsory). That might be the same route that Michael suggested in the previous post. There were "Saver Fares" listed as low as €39, but I'm not sure what's necessary to qualify for the lower fares? Hopefully one of our rail experts can provide some details on that.
When you arrive at Interlaken, buy a ticket to Murren (this will include all modes of transport). Take the small Berner Oberland train to Lauterbrunnen. When you arrive there, cross the street and transfer to the bright yellow Post Bus which will take you to the Cable Car station at Stechelberg. Board the Cable Car which will take you to Gimmelwald; walk across the platform and board the next Cable Car which will take you to Murren. It sounds rather complicated, but it's actually a very easy trip. The details are all listed in the Switzerland Guidebook.
Happy travels!
Ken, you're right. That certainly is the more complicated route to get to Muerren from Interlaken :-)
Tim,
The route I suggested only sounds complicated. It's actually very simple and is the method I used on my last trip to Gimmelwald. I learned about that route from the RS Guidebook and will probably travel the same way on my next trip to Gimmelwald.
Tim,
Yes, a Bayern-Ticket would get you from Munich to Lindau. However, if you're going on to Interlaken, a Savings fare for the whole route would be cheaper than a Bayern-Ticket from Munich to Lindau plus regular fare tickets from there to Interlaken. And with a Bayern-Ticket you couldn't travel before 09:00 on weekdays (anytime on weekends).
To get the lowest Savings fare for Muenchen-Interlaken Ost, book well in advance (up to 90 days allowed) at www.bahn.de. The tickets are for a specific departure date and time and are non-exchangeable and non-refundable.
Tim: Isn't it possible to travel on the Bayern Ticket all the way from Munich to the Swiss/German Border of Lindau? This is a real question because I plan to do this next year.
I heard there is a more beutiful route to Interlaken but it takes longer through the mountains. Does anyone know it?
Tim: Thanks for the info. We're using a bayern ticket because we are a large group of 13. We'll also have Swiss Passes for the Swiss portion of the trip.
Ken, yes that route is good for Gimmelwald, but in your previous post you indicated using it for your trip to Muerren. To get to Muerren the simplest way from the Lauterbrunnen Train is just to walk across the street to the new Gondola up to Grutschalp and then the tiny little train to Muerren.
To Muerren from Lauterbrunnen you either have to take a bus and 2 gondolas or 1 gondola and 1 train. Luggage on the bus can be a bit cumbersome if you don't pack lightly.
