Would greatly appreciate anyone to share your experience on best means of travel from Munich to Black Forest ? Thanks.
"Black Forest" is rather vague. The Black Forest is about 120 miles long, N to S, from around Freiburg near the Southern End to just So. of Stuttgart. If it's the northern end you want to see (my favorite), take the train via Ulm to Stuttgart. From Stuttgart you can take regional trains via Eutingen im Gäu to Freudenstadt, which is often called the capital of the Northern Black Forest. From Freudenstadt, there are regional trains and local buses to a plethora of small villages. If you stay in any of the towns there, you will get a Konuskarte, which gives you free, unlimited use of the trains and buses in the area. On the other hand, if you want to see the southern end (Freiburg, Titisee, and Triberg), take the train from Ulm up the Danube, past the Hohenzollern castle town of Sigmaringen to Donaueschingen. Connect there to Triberg or Titisee. From Triberg you can go down the scenic Gutach valley to the Schwarzwald outdoor museum. An alternate route to the southern end would be to take the train from Munich to the Bodensee Island town of Lindau, then procede along the shores of Bodensee to Donaueschingen. I took that route to Titisee and Freiburg in 1988, stopping on the way in Immenstadt im Allgäu to go up into the Iller valley to Oberstdorf and Kleinwalsertal. Don't let anyone tell you you have to have a car. I've spent 21 nights in that area and visited lots of small towns (Bad Herrenalb, Calw - home of Hermann Hesse, Bad Wildbad - great spa, Bad Liebenzell, Alpirsbach), all by rail and bus.
Thanks Lee for the quick reply. We are heading to the Southend end of Black Forest & from there to Lausanne/Geneva. Your advice on travel to Lausanne would be very helpful. Thanks again.
