I'm planning on spending one night in Montalcino on the way from Florence to Orvieto. It seems that Montalcino is one of those "you can't get there from here" places. We had orginally planned to drive but our driver is also a drinker. Any suggestions for public transportation?
If you don't get a post on here, try emailing the hotelier for advice, if you have booked it already.
Teena, I think your choices are bus http://www.trainspa.it/train04/extraurbano.pdf going to Siena or Chiusi then train
or private driver http://montalcinotravel.com/intro_eng.htm
By "our driver is also a drinker," I'm guessing you mean the person in your party who would be driving would also like to sample the great wines of Montalcino. Unless you plan to visit wineries, you can drive there, park the car, and sample wines at one of the many places in town. If you plan to visit wineries, it would be simpler to drive to Montalcino in the morning, park the car, and hire a taxi or private driver for the afternoon. By the next morning, your driver will be ready to drive to Orvieto. Trying to do the trip using public transportation would require coordination of bus/train schedules and chew into your limited time. Going from Florence, you could take a train to Siena or Buonconavento and bus from there. Bus is also an option on the Florence to Siena leg. Going to Orvieto is much more complicated, and it might be easiest to backtrack to Siena and take a train from there.
