travel from Milan to Siena

My daughter will be traveling solo from Milan to Siena. Are there any recommendations for making this trip - bus, trains or some combination?

you probably want a fast train between milan and florence and then either a train or bus to siena. the bus is better and the bus station is a short walk from the train station in florence.

Deb, On that particular route, I'd suggest train from Milano Centrale to Firenze SMN, and then Bus to Siena. It appears that most (all?) of the trains on that particular route consist of an ES / AV Frecciarossa from Miilan to Florence, and then Regionale from there to Siena. Travel by train is definitely one option, but when your daughter arrives in Siena she'll need to take a Bus or Taxi from the station (which is at the bottom of the hill) up to the town. I've heard that there's a shopping mall across from the station in Siena, and travellers can reach the city centre via several Escalators within the Mall, but I haven't had an opportunity to confirm that yet. Using the SITA Bus on that trip is a better alternative, and the time is about the same. The Corse Rapide Buses make the trip in 1H:15M, and the slower Corse Ordinarie Buses are about 1H:35M. I believe the fare is about €7.00. The SITA Bus station is very close to Firenze SMN. Passengers are dropped in Siena at Piazza Gramsci, which is right in the city and easy walking distance to the main sights. Happy travels to your daughter!
