travel from Milan to Genoa

What is the most economical way to travel from Milan to Genoa? If by train, how far is the station from the airport?

Susie, I agree with Nigel, some further information would be helpful. The most "economical way to travel" is usually by train. I'll take a wild guess and assume you're arriving at Milano / MXP Terminal 1. If that's the case, there's a station at the airport. You'll likely have to change trains at Milano Centrale to connect with the train to Genova. You can check train times and other details on the Trenitalia website. An alternative would be to take the Malpensa Shuttle (Bus) from the airport to Milano Centrale and then connect with a train there. Cost is ~€7.50 and the trip is about 50-minutes (depending on traffic). Happy travels!

Susie, Do you mean the airport in Genova or Milano? If Milano, which one?

We land at the Malpensa (sp) airport. We thought we'd spend the night in Milan before going to Genoa. Our ultimate plan is a cruise, but we need the best way to travel from Milan to Genoa. Also, we have an entire day before embarking on the cruise, so is the old town in Genoa a good place to stay and is it close to the cruise port? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for that information. Do you know how far the cruise area in Genoa is from the old part of the city?

The Malpensa Express has two routes from the airport to Milan. One route goes to Cadorna. The other one goes to Milano Centrale. Trains to Centrale depart at 22 and 43 minutes past the hour. The fare is €10.00. The current fare for the Malpensa shuttle bus is €10.00. Buses run every 20 minutes. IC trains make the run from Milano to Genova in a little over 90 minutes. The standard 2nd class fare is €17.50. Booked now on the Trenitalia site, you can get a Mini fare as low as €9.00. According to viamichelin.com, the cruise port is about 2.5 km from the train station.
