We are arriving 5 days early for our tour in early September and are considering going to visit a friend in Chatel France. What would be the best way to get there and then back to Varenna for our tour? Are private drivers a good option for one way? Are there sites that help figure out the best way to do this? Thanks
www.viamichelin.com is a good driving route planner. Don't forget to buy a Swiss vignette for the car costing 40 CHF. I think a private driver would be hugely expensive.
People don't recommend a long stressful drive right after landing from an Intercontinental flight. Maybe only go as far as Stresa on Lake Maggiore and spend your first night. You can do the drive over the Simplon Pass, or use the car transporter train to Brig the following day.
Look to turn the car in at Como city. Then go to Varenna by lake boat.
I think a private driver the whole way would be very expensive. But you could take the train to Martigny in Switzerland, 3.5-4 hours away from Milan, and maybe hire a private driver from there—-it is only 28 miles away. Or maybe there is a bus.
Or you could rent a car in Milan or at the airport, and drive yourselves, as Sam suggests.
