Travel from Madrid to Santiago de Compostela

Help! We will be picking up a rental car in Madrid and thought about driving north to see Santiago de Compostela and a bit of Galicia, before going to Portugal. It seems like it's a very long drive to Santiago, about 10 hours by one website's calculation. Does anyone have any idea of how the drive is? I thought that I might fly/rail to Santiago from Madrid instead, then pick up the car in Santiago. Any ideas will be very much appreciated.

You can fly on Spanair - www.spanair.com - for E42 per person. The flight takes just over 1 hour and you can pick up a rental car at the airport.

If you need to save the time, the idea of taking Spanair's flight is a good one. But if you want to drive, you should be able to do it in about 7 hours. It's about 600 kilometers (375 miles) with all but about 40 kilometers (25 miles) on four-lane express highways (some of which are toll roads) where the speed limit is 120 Kph, or about 75 mph. The section not yet completed can get very busy, though, and it climbs quite high...but it's very scenic.
