We are going to london for a week and want to hop over to see the Omaha beach area. Any advice on how to do it and how many days needed?
Well, Stacey, here's what I would do:
1. Take the Eurostar from London St. Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord
2. Transfer to Paris St. Lazare station using the RER E.
3. Take the local train from St. Lazare to Bayeux. Book tickets on TGV-Europe.com and select GREAT BRITAIN as the country of collection to view non-inflated prices. To retrieve tickets, bring the confirmation e-mail and the credit card used for purchase to a ticket counter in St. Lazare.
4. From Bayeux, I would take a guided tour of the D-Day Beaches (Les plages de Débarquement).
You can customize that plan according to your needs. For example, some would prefer to tour the beaches independently and rent a car in Bayeux instead.
How many days? It depends on how much you want to see. There are some who see everything in a few hours and then hop back on a bus to Paris. Others prefer to linger. The amount of days is up to you, but I would recommend 2-3 days.
Hope that helps.
Very helpful answer by Martine (hi Martine). Just adding that by far the favorite tour of travelers to the D-Day Beaches, who report in to this board, are those tours given by this company:http://www.battlebus.fr/
thank you for your help
I would also suggest Battle Bus Tour. Our tour was 9 hours and jamed packed.
We took the Amercian Highlights Tour which included:
This tour visits both U.S. beaches, Utah and Omaha in one day, and covers the most well known American D - Day tourist sites. You visit the Airborne Museum in Sainte Mere Eglise , the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc , explore Omaha Beach and have time for reflection at the American Cemetery in Colleville.
