Travel from Italy to Austria to Dublin, Ireland

Greetings,
I am driving myself crazy trying to figure out our best mode of travel from Trieste, Italy to Graz, Austria to Dublin Ireland.

So far I have tried the trains form Trieste to Graz although it appears that we would have to change trains a minimum of three times. I have not figured out how to take a train into Slovina and then Graz. I think this involves going from Trieste to Ljubljana then??

Q1: Is it best to take the train from Trieste to Graz via Slovina?
Q2: Is it best to take the train from Italy through Austria.
Q3: Should we somehow get to Austria and then rent a car?

So now on to the Graz - Ireland route. I think we are going to fly from Vienna to Dublin. I found a decent airfare from Bratislava (Vienna) on Ryanair. It is cost prohibitive to fly from Graz to Ireland.

Q3: How the heck do I get from Graz to Bratislava?? Is there a train, and if so when would I need to leave Graz to make a 10 am flight?

If you can help me out with this I would be most appreciative!!!
Thanks,
Maryalice

I can start with the Graz-Bratislava leg for your Ryanair flight to Dublin. First, Bratislava's across the border in Slovakia, about an hour the other side of Vienna. Even with your own car, it would take three hours to make the run, and you'd probably want to check in 90 minutes before flight departure. So it's not realistic to make that run by public transit in time for a 10 am flight. You'd need to, at best, spend a night in Vienna, then check with Ryanair to see if they run buses to Bratislava airport (they usually do). Another option might be this....a cheap Ryanair flight Graz to London-Stansted ($40-125 depending on when you travel), then Ryanair from there to Dublin ($20).

As for Trieste-Graz, the only feasible way appears to be thru Udine then on to Graz, about three connections a day, and it takes about 6 1/2 hours. You will have to change trains twice, once in Udine, then again in Bruck an der Mur to head south into Graz...about twice as long as by car. You can check routes, timings, and prices at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html or at www.oebb.at/en. You will need a reservation on the leg from Udine to Bruck. I would suggest advance purchase so you KNOW you have a seat on the train you need.
