I am taking a cruise out of Savona in October. What is the best way to get from Genova to Savona by public transport. The Trenatalia trains seem to be booked. How would I go by other means like bus or tram?

Wayne, nothing wrong with the trains. They are not booked either. The difficulty may be your expectation that you want to buy a ticket online in advance - which you cannot do.
On which date are you traveling and about what time? The trains from Genoa to Savona are mostly local Regionale trains. No seat reservations are permitted. Trenitalia does not sell tickets for this class of trains farther out than one week. Don't worry. Buy your tickets when you get there. Even if the train fills up (which it won't), you can stand. It's like your local bus.
I realize that this may make you very uneasy but that's the way it works with the Regionale train. The ticket is an "open ticket" that is good for 60 days. Even if you could purchase one in advance, it's first come, first gets the seat - just like the bus. You won't miss your train.
