We are arriving in Rome(FCO) and need to travel to Civitavecchia.
Which is a better way to go: train or limo? It is just the 2 of us. We are in our sixties. Is the train too much for us? Is there a transfer service that goes on a regular schedule or are we stuck with paying 110 euros for a limo?
A frequently discussed question. You really only have two options. Take the train or a taxi/shuttle/limo. And 110E is not a bad price. The train would run from about 15E to maybe 30E depending on how you did it. Either way you need to go into Rome (either Termini or Trastevere) and change to the train to Civit.. It would take in the range of two to two and half hours depending on trains and waiting time. We have done it by train four times so I can give you greater details if interested. http://goitaly.about.com/od/romeitaly/a/civitavecchia.htm Here is a helpful article and it is good place to start. I know some cruises have a blog or chat page for all guests for each cruise. It is a vehicle for meeting people pre-departure. You could consider seeing if there will be others arriving at FCO for this cruise at/around the same time who would be interested in sharing the limo ride.
Unfortunately I am not big fan of that article. Anyone who has made that trip would immediately recognize a number of inaccuracies. There was another poster who liked to quote this article. Doubt if the author has made the trip but just collected some general info. Contact me with a PM if you want specifics. If you want to find other people on your cruise, go to cruisecritic.com and sign up under your specific cruise - cruise line, ship, date, -- and you find others on that ship.
Very few, if any, articles (or people for that matter) are the definitive answer on any question, but merely "a place to start" as many people don't know what they don't know if doing something for the first time. Multiple sources help you start asking questions to things you didn't even know to ask about. And, the article pretty much summed up that the whole affair can be a bit much after a transatlantic flight for someone a bit older who MAY be struggling with luggage and fatigue.
There are no direct runs from FCO to Civitavecchia. The least expensive option is to ride the FR1 train to Roma Trastevere station from the FCO Train Station. The cost is €8. From Roma Trastevere station you would change trains and take the FR3 to Civitavecchia. The cost is €4.10 - so total cost per person is €12.10. That's under €25 for a couple. These links, although they pertain somewhat to cruisers visiting Rome for the day, do have a lot of pictures and maps and may help you in your journey - Cruising to Rome for the Day and Traveling from Rome to Civitavecchia. Good Luck!
Thanks to all for your help. I believe we can do the train.
