I have one day to visit Ostia Antica from Civitavecchia. Any suggestions as to train travel, route, timing, cost etc.
Search this board or maybe someone else knows off hand, but there are a number of ways to get from the port into Rome (Train, bus, shuttle) most are relatively cheap, train probably cheapest, then once in Rome, Ostica Antica is a short Metro ride away for 1 Euro each way.
This could be bit tricky. Using the above suggestion is doable and probably the easiest. -- allow about two and half hours including waiting for trains, etc. There are about 3 trains an hour into Rome from Civ -- it is commuter run. Takes 45 min to 1:15 depending on trains and is 3 to 8 E. Shift to the metro (subway - 1E+) at Termini and change at the Piramide stop. Now, here are some of the potential problems. If you are coming off a cruise ship the shuttle will take you to the port entrance which is about a mile from the train station. Probably will have to walk. It is an easy walk along the beach. There will be taxi there but they want the big fare to Rome or the airport and not a mile to the train station. At the train station it could take longer to buy the ticket than the ride to Rome especially if more than one cruise ship in port. It would be worth it if you could pre-purchase the ticket to Rome. Buy a second class, open ticket. You may have to stand. Civ train station is the bottle neck of your plan.
Since OA is not that far from Civ, you might check with a taxi at the gate. I am guessing that it is more more than 30 minutes. Then use the metro and train to get back. The train stop is only three blocks from the park. That could save you a lot of time. Good luck.
Trains from Civitavecchia to Rome all stop at Roma Ostiense station, which is where you change to the local train to Ostia Antica. No need to go to Roma Termini and back track. There's an IC train that goes from Civitavecchia to Ostiense in just over 40 minutes (runs about every 2 hours) and frequent regional trains that take about an hour. Local trains depart for Ostia a few times an hour, so change time isn't too long. Trip to Ostia Antica train station is about a half hour, and walk from there to the sight is about 10 minutes. Cost for IC train is EUR 10.50 each way (regional train would be less) and local train between Ostiense and Ostia is EUR 1.00 each way. Trenitlia website is advertising a 35% discount for round trips on the same day, so ask about that when you buy your Civitavecchia-Ostiense tickets.
I am withdrawing my travel recommendation. Frank's is much better. We have made the trip to Civitavecchia four times and trip to OA once but from Rome each time.
However, my experience of getting to and from the Civ station and purchasing tickets is still valid. Try to pre-purchase the tickets. If would be worth it even with a substantial fee for purchasing.
