We're in Italy during May, but need to get from Cinque Terre area to Augsburg, Germany. Will not return to Italy; will fly back to USA from Munich. Any tips for most economical and efficient way?
There are train runs. It's a 13.5hr train ride. You will route from the CT to Milan/Verona Porto Nuovo/Munich/Augsburg. 3-5 train changes depending on the run. You can see this run on www.bahn.de. This is the German rail website. There's even the opportunity to purchase one of the runs online as your journey will end in Germany. You can print the tickets at home. If you are unable to purchase online, I would suggest purchasing in the larger train station that you will use to get to the CT (i.e. Genoa, Milan, Florence, Pisa)
Judy, As mentioned in the previous reply, that's going to be a LONG trip via train. The easiest trip that I could find was a departure from Monterosso at 06:55, arriving Augsburg at 19:16 (time 12H:21M, 3 changes at Milan, Bologna & Munich). Another option would be a budget flight from Pisa to Cologne (flight time 1H:40M - GermanWings currently has flights listed at €49.99 PP). From Cologne HBf the trip to Augsburg is as short as 3H:58M with no changes (this will vary depending on which train you're using). You could also check This Website for other budget flights that may work for you. Some of the flights are direct, and some have layovers. If you'd prefer to travel by train, one alternative would be to stop for perhaps one night at an intermediate point (perhaps Verona) for one night and then continue to Augsburg the following day. That's a method I often use. Happy travels!
The Pisa-Cologne direct flight on Germanwings doesn't operate every day of the week. If you can sleep on trains, consider taking the train from the Cinque Terre to Florence in time to catch the Florence-Munich CNL night train that departs at 21:37 and arrives at 06:30. Take an IC train from Munich to Augsburg, departing at 06:48 and arriving at 07:19. For detailed timetables for all train routes, see the German Rail site.
