Travel from Budapest to Venice

What is the best way to travel from Budapest to Venice in July? I have tried looking at routes through Sovenia and that does not work so I am at a loss as what to do train or bus?

According to bahn.de there's a direct night train, Budapest Keleti to Venezia Santa Lucia, 17:05 - 07:16, but you'd have to check whether it runs on your specific date.

Thanks for the information on the train. Now I cannot book it online and can not find a phone # that works that has an english speaking rep. Any ideas?

Mary, The direct route which is the night train route departing at 1705 from Budapest goes through Croatia and Slovenia and arrives at 0736 in Venice (Venedig). Now, depending on your time constraint, you could do the ride with 2 legs, ....1st leg go from Budapest-Munich. The Railjet train is the quickest and direct link between the the 2 cities. This link by the RJ train was done only a few years ago; spend the night in Munich, and take the next direct Munich-Venice train for the 2nd leg. The 1705 route is the most direct. Make sure you ticket covers Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia too.

"Make sure you ticket covers Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia too." Not sure what you mean by that. If she buys a ticket from Budapest to Venice it will of course cover the whole journey. Are you thinking she has a rail pass? Can't see any point in going to Munich - it's out of the way. If I wanted to overnight other than on the train I'd do it in Innsbruck and take the scenic ride over the Brenner Pass.
