I'm taking my first trip to Spain late September through early October. My travel plans include Barcelona, Valencia, Nerja and Madrid. I'm having a hard time finding out the best way to get from Barcelona to Valencia and then Valencia to Nerja. I want direct routes if possible. Any advice would be most grateful.

Look on www.renfe.com, the website of the Spanish national rail operator. October is too far ahead - tickets go on sale 90 days in advance, so try searching for dates in June. Timetables change, but it should give you some ideas. It looks like the nearest station to Nerja is at Malaga.

When you look on Renfe, use the "purchase" option ( the shopping cart icon) to see schedules and fares. As noted above, you won't be able to see schedules for September, so put in a date inflate May to get an idea of the Promo fares offered. For the stations, use the asterisk options, like Barcelona* and Valencia* so you don't have to choose the right station.
