Travel from Barcelona to the South of France to the Tuscany region

Hello,
I am planning a trip with my husband to Barcelona, from where we would like to explore the South of France and then the Tuscany region of Italy. We have about 14 days total. I am looking for travel recommendations on getting from place to place. Originally, we were thinking of renting a car and driving the whole way because we really want to experience as much as we can, but I'm wondering if the train would be a better option. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

One thing against a car rental is the huge drop-off fee you'll incur if you rent a car in one country and drop it off in another. Maybe consider using the train from Barcelona to the south of France, renting a car there, then training into Italy and renting another car there.
