Four friends will be traveling from Barcelona to Nice/Cannes next month. We are having trouble finding the best transportation option. We prefer not to fly because we want to enjoy the scenery along the way. The only train we have been able to find goes from Barcelona to Montpellier arriving at about 4pm. We would have to overnight there and the on to Nice/Cannes the next morning. Is there another train option we are missing? Anyone know about the bus?

You can leave Barcelona Sants at 09:00, connect in Figueres Vilafant and Montpellier, and arrive in Nice at 18:33. See the detailed timetables on the German Rail site. On alternate days of the week Eurolines buses leave Barcelona at 15:30 and 17:00 and arrive in Nice at 02:00 and 04:00. There is no service on Sundays.

You're welcome, Hol. The problem with Rail Europe is that its timetables are incomplete because it only shows trains for which it sells tickets. The German Rail site is best for detailed timetables for virtually all of Europe.

Tim, Another person in my group is handling this aspect of our trip so I don't know exactly where the problem lies, but she can't seem to come up with a price for this trip. Is there a secret to locating the price along with the timetable?

You're welcome, Hol. It's possible to get discount fares by booking in advance, but here are the standard 2nd class fares. I got them on the SNCF (French National Rail) site. Barcelona-Figueres: Fares range from €17.30 to €22.50. Figueres-Montpellier: €41.90. Montpellier-Nice: €65.80. If you want to try to book discount fares online, I'll be happy to assist you.
