My 11-year old daughter and I are traveling to Europe for several weeks this summer. We will fly from the US into Amsterdam. We will be there for several nights then we want to go to London. Would it be better to fly to London or take a train? I assume taking the train would be cheaper, but I wonder how much we would save and whether it would be worth the extra time and hassle to get there by train. Any advice?
I will take a train most days over the extra time and hassle need to fly get to the airport, early checkin, security hassles, wait for the plane, jammed into tight seats, unexpected delays, get from airport to downtown. That is a lot of hassle compared to stepping on and off a train and enjoy wide comfortable seats.
other than the dark bit under the Channel, with train you get to see scenery . Much more interesting than seeing nothing from the plane
Thanks for all of your feedback. I really appreciate it as it is a big help! Happy Trails to you all!
Train isn't necessarily cheaper than air - budget airlines can be cheaper if you manage to find a really cheap ticket - but it will be much less hassle.
EasyJet is a budget airline that flies from Amsterdam to Gatwick, Luton, and Stansted. Gatwick is closest to London. Bought well in advance, tickets can be very cheap. If you book well in advance at www.nshispeed.nl/en, you can get a combined discount fare of €50 for an InterCity train from Amsterdam to Brussels plus the Eurostar from Brussels to London. Taking a Thalys train from Amsterdam to Brussels is faster, but it costs more. Your best combined discount fare is €79. Take the train. Sit back, relax, and travel from city center to city center. And reduce your carbon footprint.
we are looking at taking the "flying dutchman" night ferry from Hook to the UK-it lands near the train station, and then its into the Liverpool station, which is close to the Tower.
On Seat 61, it looks pretty reasonable from a total price, which includes the cabin and train tickets
