A group of us are planning an 8 day River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basel in July of next year. We would like to spend a day in Lucern, Salzburg, and Vienna following the cruise. However, after looking at the map, I am not sure that is going to be possible. It looks like it would take a while by train to get from Lucern to Salzburg. Can anyone tell me how long by train, and if this is a good option what is the best way to purchase tickets? Thank you!

You can find the latest schedules for all over Europe on the German Rail (Bahn) website. The Austrian Rail website (www.oebb.at) can sell you discounted advance purchase online tickets from Luzern to Vienna via Innsbruck and RailJet (a 9 hour trip). If you are stopping in Salzburg, you can also get discounted tickets from Luzern to Salzburg via Munich from the Bahn site.
