Can you recommend a ferry line & its web site for a foot passenger for a round-trip from Stockhom and Tallin, Estonia? Also, can you tell me what kind of price range (USD) I should expect. Am I correct - that it is a 15 hour, overnight trip? Looking at flights, it seems a very short flight. Am I missing something?
Vicki, We took the overnight cruise from Stockholm to Tallinn in the fall. We left at 6:00 pm and arrived at 10:00 the next morning. (You lose an hour when you change time zones.)
I'm not positive, but I think it was a Silja ship. The name of the boat was the MX Victoria I. The boat itself was fine, nothing special, but the trip is really neat. You sail through the Swedish archipelago, which is quite scenic. It is wonderful seeing the sun set on the Baltic if you are lucky enough to have good weather.
We spent the day in Tallinn (which was fabulous) and took the ferry back to Sweden the next night (the night of the day we arrived in Tallinn). It left at 6:00 pm also.
I don't recall the price exactly, but I think it was around $250 for the round trip. I do remember that the price varies depending on the day of the week you leave and the type of room you choose. We had a regular room with an outer window, which was the second cheapest.
I did not look into flying because I liked the idea of having two nights accomodations covered by the boat.
Tallink/Silja operates the ferry between Stockholm and Tallinn. You can check the price on this website.

The Stockholm archipelago is beautiful and people take the ferry to enjoy the beautiful scenery. When you factor in the cost of getting to Arlanda airport and the cost of a night's hotel, the ferry often works out to be a good value.
Laura, there are several cruise operators, but Tallink/Silja seems to be the best.

Ships are a whooooole lot sloooowwer than planes.
Ash, sorry, I corrected my previous post. I meant to say between Stockholm and Tallinn to answer the poster's question (but had typed Helsinki in error). Tallink/Silja is the only company that I am aware of that operates a regular direct ferry between Stockholm and Tallinn.
Laura
Laura, yeah, I think you're right. It's weird the way the fares vary according to the time of day, the day of the week, and most likely whether or not the Captain got any sleep the night before.
I'm thinking about trying the ferry from Stockholm to Tallinn instead of flying. I will be hooking up with the RS Tallinn-Helsinki-STPB tour in Tallinn and am flying in a couple days early into Stocklholm. I was originally looking at flying on to Tallinn but thought the ferry ride might be scenic.
It appears from the web-site that a 4 person shared room is the cheapest thing that can be reserved. Aren't there any coach type seats? Or is it just that that fare isn't reserveable ahead of time?
How do you secure your luggage in the ferry rooms?
Hi Vicki, Call "Sea Europe" at 1-800-533-3755 for your Tallink/Silja ferry info. You will receive a 15% discount if you are three weeks out. I don't know about return tickets but one way cost in a class A cabin (double, outside window) is approx $166. per person. dinner buffet $38, buffet breakfest $15. The "Baltic Queen" is the newest ferry on the Tallin/Stockholm route. If your trip is flexable you might want to ask for it. Bon Voyage
