Travel between Scandinavian cities

We will be travelling this summer from Copenhagen to Stockholm and Stockholm to Oslo. Any suggestions on the best way to travel between these cities would be much appreciated. Flights on Norwegian Airlines at certain times are very reasonable (less that $60). Anyone flown on Norwegian? Thanks

Brian,

"best way to travel between these cities " is subjective to what you or others want.

If you have the time and $$, you can do the bus, ferry, train route. from what i understand, entering the cities via boat is spectacular and i will try that mode the next time.. If you want to just get there and then pound the pavement, i would take the plane.

happy trails.

I've done these routes by both train and by plane. Copenhagen to Stockholm will take about 5 hours on the fast, direct train. Stockholm to Oslo will take about 6 hours. You can get an idea of prices on sj.se. The least expensive tickets are available starting 90 days before departure.

For the train, you go from city center to city center. You don't have to spend a lot of time at the train station as you can arrive shortly before your train departs. The seats are more comfortable than any plane. You can get up and move around. You carry your bag with you so no chance of the airline losing it. And if there is ash in the sky due to an Icelandic volcano, the train still goes :). The trains are less likely to experience a delay.

For the flights, don't forget to add in the cost of getting to and from the airport. Also, Norwegian has a relatively small carry-on limit so you may want to consider paying to check your bag. Also, they add on an extra fee to use a credit card. I haven't flown Norwegian, but I recently bought a ticket from them as I am flying them this summer. Sometimes it is cheaper to fly.

My general rule is that if the travel time is under 6 hours, I usually choose the train, mainly because I don't really enjoy spending time in airports and on planes. You might consider doing one of each (e.g. take one of the routes by train and one by plane).

Laura has a good summary of the pros and cons and things to consider when comparing. I would add that many people, myself included, like to see the scenery from the train as part of the travel experience. And I thought Sweden was a beautiful place to see. But after about 4-5 hours, it is generally faster to fly all things considered. So if you have a short vacation and want to maximize your time in those cities, it is worth the time and any extra expense to fly.
