My family and I will be in Rome. Our destination is Cinque Terre; however, I would love to do a day trip to Orvieto/Civita. Would it be better to go back to Rome and then up the coast to Cinque Terre OR continue via Florence. We have been to Florence a couple of times and would rather avoid time in that direction.

You can easily go to Orvieto for a day trip, as it's just a 75 minute train ride from Rome. You could rent a car at Hertz to run down to Civita and see the countryside. Hertz is across the street from the train station. You could also ride a bus to Civita, but you'd have to coordinate the times. I'd rather drive it.
Orvieto is a very popular hill town that's well worth seeing.
