Will a Swiss half fare card be useful in going between Nyon and Stresa - at least the Swiss portion of the trip. I understand that there is some rail construction going on over the route and that travelers are transferred by bus over the non-rail portion of the trip. Do we need separate bus tickets? This is sounding so complicated to me. We are leaving in just a few days from the States, and I still have not booked this portion of our trip. Can anyone help?
The journey from Nyon to Stressa will take 4.0hrs-5.5hrs depending on the run you choose. There will be 3-4 transportation changes. There is construction on this route between Brig and Domodossola. The fare will be approx. 80CHF. For this journey by itself, you don't need the 1/2 fare card. It costs 110CHF. If you have other transportation needs in Switzerland, you might consider a Swiss 1/2-fare card when you arrive. As for separate tickets, all of this will be provided by the Swiss transportation system when you purchase the trip. Nobody can beat the Swiss on the timeliness of their transportation system. All of your changes need to take place between 10-13 minutes from what I see on the train schedules so you will need to be alert. Also, you can buy the tickets when you arrive in Switzerland. If you are traveling to Nyon from another Swiss location such as Geneva or Lausanne, you can buy the tickets you need at those locations. Don't worry. U.S. citizens freak about the possibility of full or infrequent trains. You'll be just fine.
