Taking a quick spring break trip to Munich and Florence for spring break. Would like to go by train one way and flight back. What are the best train discounts to look for? I've been on the Eurail site and it's $440 R/T and am wondering if there are other discounts I might try. We won't be doing any other train travel...just focusing on these two cities.
" I've been on the Eurail site" First, you've been to the RailEurope site, not the Eurail site. RailEurope is essentially a travel agency and has terribly marked up prices. Use the German Rail website. If you can book well in advance, 3-92 days, as much as possible because the lower priced tickets sell out, you can get Munich to Bologna for €39 per person each way. You still have to go by Italian Rail from Bologna to Firenze, but it can't be that much.
I'll add to Lee's comments. Bologna-Firenze is €25.00 on EuroStar Alta Velocita trains and €10.50 on IC trains. Buy that ticket in Munich so you won't have to worry about a short connection time in Bologna. There is also a direct Munich-Firenze night train. If you book ASAP on the German Rail site, you may still be able to get discount fares. There are no cheap flights.
Tim is correct - I've beaten my head against a wall, but there are no cheap, QUICK flights. The cheap ones go through Cologne, London, OR direct for hundreds of Euro :-( The train is as fast (and LOTS cheaper) as flying - the whole airport mess means alot of time wasted that could be spent sleeping on the train...
