Travel between Madrid, Spain and Bayonne, France

My husband and I are booked on a tour of the Basque country which begins in Bayonne, France. We would like to fly to Madrid, arriving a couple of days prior to the start of the tour, and then leave for Bayonne the day the tour starts. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to travel between Madrid and Bayonne?

According to the timetables on the German Rail site, it's a fairly long ride if you do it all by train. You can leave Madrid-Chamartin at 08:00, have a 2hr44min layover in Hendaye, and arrive in Bayonne at 17:09. Or you can leave Madrid-Chamartin at 10:15, connect in Valladolid Campo Grande and Hendaye, and arrive in Bayonne at 17:59. Another option would be to fly Spanair from Madrid to Bilbao, departing at 08:45 and arriving at 09:45. Then take a PESA bus from Bilbao to Bayonne, departing at 13:00 and arriving at 16:00. Go to www.skyscanner.com for complete airline schedules. Go to www.pesa.net for bus schedules.
