travel between London & Paris and in Italy

I'm taking my first trip to Europe at the end of June with my 2 boys, age 11 and 17. I'm looking for suggestions regarding transportation between London and Paris then to Italy. My itenerary: 3 nights London, 4 in Paris, 1 in Milan, 2 Tremezzo(Bellagio), 2 Venice, 4 Riomaggiore(Cinque Terre), 2 Florence, 2 Sorrento, and 4 Rome. Thank you in advanced!

London to Paris is easy, take the train. Flying to Venice might be your best option after that, and working south, but there is also a night train from Paris.

I will say though you don't ask that the Italy part of your itinerary is very crowded. Don't underestimate the amount of time and energy you will be spending just getting from place to place.

Have a great time.

Kathy,

Your best bet for travel from London to Paris is the EuroStar from London St. Pancras to Gare du Nord. It's a bit pricey, but by far the quickest and easiest method.

For travel from Paris to Italy, the choice will depend. If you're starting in the western part of the country, you could take one of the fast trains to Milan. There's at least one direct train from Paris Lyon to Milano Centrale via TGV (travel time 7H:08M, reservations compulsory). The train is generally less hassle than flying, as you won't have to deal with travel to & from the airports, security, check-in, etc.

The Italy portion of your Itinerary looks extremely "busy" and there's no mention of travel times. I'd suggest dropping at least one of the destinations and providing a bit more "room" for travel times. Sorrento is one destination that stands out.

I'm assuming you're using open-jaw flights, inbound London and outbound Rome?

Kathy - If you take the Eurostar to Paris you want to look at booking tickets soon, before the cheap fares are gon. Currently 7:27am train fron London to Paris is £165.00 for the 3 of you. If you opt for the 5:25am train the fare is £106.00. You can check out times and fares at

My daughter and I are taking a trip in July and have a similar itinerary as you. This is the plan we came up with that worked best for us, time and budget wise.

London to Paris on Eurostar, then Paris to Milan on the Artesia Night train (leave Paris at 8pm and arrive in Milan at 5:30am), then we are taking trains during the day to the other cities in Italy that we are visiting. We purchased our Eurostar tickets (50Euro each - pretty good deal), and we purchased our night train tickets (not too cheap, but saved a night in a hotel and gives us a full day in Paris and then in Milan). We will purchase our other train tickets when we get there.

Thank you for the responses. I booked London to Paris on the Eurostar. I also dropped my destination to Sorrento and extended my stay in Florence. I'm working on a flight to Milan or the over night train. And, yes, I fly into London and out of Rome. Thank you for the great advice. Looking forward to our trip.
