Travel between Greece and Italy

I'm planning on visiting Greece and Italy next summer and on starting in Greece first. What's the best/fastest way to get from one to the other?

Fly or ferry. It depends on where you're going in each country. The shortest ferry ride is down around Brindisi, but if you're not going to both western Greece and southern Italy, flying is all that makes sense.

There are two basic ways to get from one to the other, the ferry or flying.

Using the ferry presents some problems in that first, your itinerary would need to get you to Patras or Igoumenitsa, neither really a tourist destination, so figure a few hours travel to get there. Once there, the ferries leave late in the day and travel overnight, arriving in Brindisi or Bari in the morning, again, neither great destinations, meaning most take a train a few hours to Naples or Rome. All adds up to about 24 hours of travel. As for cost, to sleep on the deck or in a chair, figure 75 to 90 euro, 150 euro if you want a bed. Of course you also need to add in train or bus fare to get to Patras and then where you really want to go. All together, figure 150 to 200 euro or more, but you save a night of hotel. As for ferries, do keep in mind that they are not cruise ships, but fairly utilitarian transportation. (see Superfast Ferries)

Flying would mean leaving from Athens most likely (though you can get connecting flights from a number of places) and most likely using a budget airline like Aegean Air. The cost would be closer to 200 euro, but only about a morning or afternoon of your time. Definitely faster, better? you need to be the judge.
