What is the best way to get from Gatwick to London City Airport where the second leg of our journey will start?
Unfortunately getting to London City airport from other London airports is not very nice, as it's really directed at central London business travellers. The only public transport to London City is the Docklands Light Railway, and there aren't any direct coach services from Gatwick as far as I can see. If you are at all inexperienced with using public transport, I'd get the wallet out and get a taxi. If you are experienced with using city public transport, my suggested route would be: Train from Gatwick Airport to London Bridge station. Usually this will be a First Capital Connect train to Bedford, but during the peak hours these don't serve London Bridge and are replaced by Southern Railway trains to central London only. Jubilee Line tube from London Bridge to Canning Town station. Docklands Light Railway train from Canning Town to London City. Make sure you get a DLR train towards Woolwich Arsenal, there are other destinations from Canning Town. If you take this route there are definitely lifts at both London Bridge and Canning Town, assuming they're working. You may be able to get a through ticket at Gatwick, or you may have to get a second ticket at London Bridge. I would leave at least three and preferably four hours between landing time at Gatwick and check-in opening at London City. Also, the transportation in east London will be really, really screwed up during the next few weeks because of the Olympics. If you are planning to travel while the Olympics are on, I would seriously advise you not to try to use London City at all. Go a different route, even if it's more expensive.
Also, if you ask anyone for directions at Canning Town, make sure to say "London City Airport". If you just say "London City" they'll probably think you want the City of London and direct you back into town.
Thank you so much for the info. Using frequent flyer miles and there are other options so I think I'll skip the one with that airport connection!! Love London but can't imagine dragging my suitcases through the tube stations and rail stations.
