I will be based in England this summer but want to make 2 long weekend trips to Europe. The chunel seems very expensive. Are there cheaper alternatives? I'm considering a Britrail england flexipass for travel in england, a 6 day 3 country Eurail Select pass for Europe. Then take a ferry between Dover and Calais. Anyone know if this is workable? How far is it from train stations to the ferry?
Check Ryanair, EasyJet, British Airways, Germanwings, Lufthansa... you name it.
Yes, use the cheap airfare as it is easier and obviously faster than ground/water. If you want to take the ferry Dover/Calais the train pulls up in the docks; it is a very short walk to catch the trains. Inside England is the most expensive travel by train; you could fly RyanAir in England (Edinburgh or Manchester). Have a great summer exploring Europe. Sounds like a great opportunity. Linda
A word about EasyJet. Its a great airline but there are restrictions such as when you need to check in (don't be late!), weight on baggage, and even flying out of the smaller airports like Luton or Stanstead. Yup. its definitely no frills.
If you can overlook some of that, the airline is simply super!!
If you book in advance, you can really save a ton of pounds. I remember booking my flight from London to Paris and paid 12 pounds one way.
In March '06 we took the chunnel from London to Paris. But the Sunday return trip was going to be pretty expensive on the train, so we ended up going with BMI and it was about half the cost and put us right into Heathrow without having to tube it over from the train station.
