Travel Between Budapest and Prague

My family (5 adults) will be traveling from Prague to Vienna to Budapest this summer. What will be the best way to get from Budapest to Prague at the end of the trip, train, plane, or automobile?

In December, we took a train from Budapest to Prague. It is a 7 hour train trip. We took the 5:30am direct train to Prague and when you leave that early, you sleep on the train and are in Prague in no time. If you are using a rail pass, make sure you buy a supplement for Slovakia. I did not realize our train was going through that country and was asked to pay the supplement in cash, on the spot, when I presented my rail pass (meant for Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Czech republic). We did not have enough cash but they took what we had (1000 Hungarian forints and 20 euro, we were short by 50 euro) and let us stay on. I was embarrassed and afraid that we would be kicked off, but I learned my lesson to really examine the route of the train before I get on and use a rail pass.

In 2007 we took the train from Budapest to Prague. I remember it being a relativly "fast" trip because we were able to sleep as a previous poster mentioned. We did splurge and went first class though. If renting a car for 5 adults and their luggage you are probably going to have to upgrade to a van and that could be very expensive, especially if just renting it on a daily basis. Good luck!
