Travel and New Year's Eve in Munich

My husband and I will be in London for christmas and considering low budget options for travel from the 26th of December 2009 to 5th of January 2010. Looking at the options I was thinking of catching a flight to Vienna, spend 2 nights there. Then take the train/bus to Salzburg and spend 2 nights there, purchase a bayern ticket and travel to Munich to spend New Year's Eve. Is this a good itinerary?

It sounds like a great trip to wonderful destinations. However, do you really want to pack up and go so many different times, especially in the winter, with bulkier clothes etc. The days will be really short, too. Also, consider that you may run into ice and/or snow slowing or closing down transportation options. If you already know your way around Munich, then fine, spend New Year's Eve. But if not, I'd stay in Salzburg for the festivities and then go on to Munich. I would spend an additional night in Vienna, too, just to get more of a vacation feel.

Thanks Anna for your advice! From what you are saying we should probably spend 3 nights in vienna and spend new year's eve in salzburg. Do you recommend travel to another Bavarian city instead of Munich for the remaining nights? This is our first trip so we do not know our way around. Also we will be celebrating our first wedding anniversary on the 3rd of January so it would be nice to celebrate in a romantic location. Any advice?

Sarah, there are so many totally fantastic charming towns all over that neck of the woods (Bavaria and Austria) that offer really romantic winter get-aways and skiing holidays, some with horse-drawn sleds, fireplaces, etc., in smaller hotels, pensions and bed and breakfast situations. Unfortunately, I'm not much help in this regard, since I usually spend the holidays with family in Germany. Why not pose another question on this board: Any suggestions for fabulous first anniversary hotel in January in Salzburg or Munich area or something to that effect. Try googling various websites - they usually have an English version. Maybe skiing vacation or winter vacation in Bavaria or Austria.

Thanks again, Anna. These are great suggestions. I would love to find some smaller B&Bs. I am sure I can find something by searching online.
