Travel Agencies and Do-It-Yourelf

I've got the travel dates pretty well nailed down for a mid-Sept to early mid-Oct tip, and I thought I'd check out airfare via a well known national travel agency. They were $300 higher than my rough estimate, $2800, I quickly roughed out a week ago. However, I see they have me from Sacramento to SFO to London on a r/t for about $360 more than I found. They've got me from London to Dublin for $275, and I think one can do better than that by at least $100. I may be able to press them on that, but I'll alternately try another well know travel agency to people who listen to KGO-AM from San Francisco on Saturday mornings. My trip takes me to Athens and beyond before turning back via Cairo, then home via London.

In either case I suppose, there's a possibility of getting a better break on it all, if I allow them to schedule hotels, and such. Don't know. At present I think I can do this pretty well myself, and on the road if necessary, which is likely fairly often.

Then there's DIY. The interesting aspect of this is that I have about $1000 worth of discount on a major credit card for a r/t ticket to Europe, and beyond. I may have them scope this out for the entire trip, or just go for Sacramento to London and do the rest of purchasing on my own.

Another way of approaching this is to wait a week or so and hope the airlines will bring their Sept-Oct prices down, and go with one of the ideas above. I understand European airlines and USA airlines are not necessarily in synch on this.

London to Dublin for $275 is ridiculous if that's for 1 person. You can do it for about $50-75 on the discount airlines with all fees included, and not much more on one of the larger airlines.

That RT fare sounds high too - most of Europe is in it's off or shoulder season in Sept/Oct.

You'll find most people on this helpline will recommend doing it yourself. Lots of knowledgeable people here who will help! :)

Wayne - Is there a way you could leave out of San Francisco rather than Sacramento? I know you are closer to Sacramento, but leaving out of SFO may save you some $$ and you can get a nonstop flight from SFO to LHR.

There are several sites to check air fares, sidestep, orbitz, kayak, vayama. I use these sites to get a rough idea on air fares, then go look at a specific airlines web site.

As Chris has stated, there are several people on the helpline that are exteremly knowledgeable on air travel.

Well, this is a fairly regular debate over at another travel site I read (Chris Elliott's) and the general upshot is that a travel agent may or may not save you money and may or may not help you if you get into a tight spot (missed or delayed flights, etc.) while traveling.

Overall, a more complicated trip probably requires a travel agent. However, I'd definitely shop around for agents if you go that route. Many people are comfortable taking the DIY approach. I did for both of my trips to Italy which were fairly straightforward, but when the airline completely screwed up our return flight home, I had to get on the phone and resolve it. Then, when their "fix" didn't work at the ticket counter in Florence at 6am, I had to deal with it on my own, and again in Amsterdam. Once I got home, it was my problem to nag the airline into reimbursing the extra money I had to pay for the Florence-Amsterdam flight I was forced to buy due to the airline's screwup. I had the time, patience, and willingness to deal with it, but other people may prefer to have an agent to handle mishaps like that.

It really boils down to your personal style, how much time you have/want to devote to airfare searches, etc. Despite my frustrations last time, I'd still do my own searching for any trip to Europe. For a more complicated trip, particularly one involving multiple flights, I'd probably talk to an agent or four.

Hi, actually, I scoped it out through SF, but the agency said they could get me a much better by going from Sac to SF, then to London. It sort of raised my eyebrow, but I thought well maybe it does work with the big package I put together. Not really when I considered it hours later.

Hi Wayne - Don't assume you will always get a better rate from SFO. I have always found for my flights that it is about the same price or less to fly from Sacramento. Then you also have to consider how long it will take you to get to SF from Nevada City, vs. how long it take to get to Sac. Your time and gas has to be considered.
