We are staying in Rapallo and are going to Avignon. The train take nine hours. Is there other transportation available that would be faster and direct?

Wow, I can see why you want an alternative to that!
Viamichelin says you can do it in 5 hours by car if you take the fastest roads. I'd pad that, but my guess is you can do better than nine hours.
Perhaps someone else who reads this can make constructive suggestions about flying to either Avignon or (if the price is right) another airport in France that will let you connect by rail (Lyon?).
