In order to catch a ferry to France, you're going to have to get from Shropshire down to one of the ferry ports on the south coast. Not exactly a drive around the block. You didn't say what your destination is in France, but wouldn't it be easier to just catch a flight from Birmingham (which I'm guessing is the closest airport to your Shropshire destination)?
