Hi there, my friend and I are backpacking through Europe the second half of May and first half of June. We are planning on traveling from city to city via Eurail. However, we are unsure how to figure out the best way to get around once we are in our designated city. What are the best ways to figure this out? Are there websites where we can find this information? (We are going to France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, England, and Ireland. Oh, and possibly Switzerland) Thanks for any help you can offer!
Most medium to large cities have bus systems. Large cities most likely have busses and metros (The Tube in London, Metro in Paris, etc.) I'd head down to the closest bookstore in Kettering and buy Rick's Book Europe Through The Back Door. Gives pertinent info on various means of travel and how to buy tickets.
Sounds like a wonderful trip.
In addition to buses and metro many cities aslo have trams. Your question is too broad to answer quickly, guidebooks can give you more detail. Here is a good all in one site which provides info on all metro systems around the world: www.urbanrail.net It will also give you links to the official sites. Simply doing a google search for the "Paris Metro", or "Amsterdam Trams" will get you to the official site as well.
These videos give you the basics on using big metro systems: like Paris and London
