Transportation using rail

Traveling from Warsaw, Poland to Berlin, Germany, then Berlin to Prague, Czec Republic, Prague to Salzburg,Austria, Salzburg to Passau, Germany and finally Passau Germany to Munich. Point to point was appox $800.00 for 2 seniors 2nd class. Poland is not a choice to pick when I am trying to figure out rail pass cost. Is Poland not part of the Eurail system? If so then what do I do? Irene

Hi Irene Poland is not a part of the Eurail Pass. You would need to pay extra for parts of your trip that traverse Poland. Add that to price of any pass you are comparing.

Thank you for your quick response. I'll take that into consideration.

Irene, where are you getting your ticket prices? Not Rail Europe, I hope. Buying in advance, you can buy 2d class tickets on bahn.de for 39 euro From Warsaw to Berlin, also 39€ from Berlin to Prague; 44 € for Prague to Salzburg, and 19-22€ for Passau to Munich. Bahn.de doesn't show Salzburg to Passau but it can't be much; you would check that on the Austrian site Oebb. That adds up to 144 € per person, without that one leg. A railpass will cost you much more

You can do Salzburg to Passau and Passau to Munich on regional trains that go through Germany. That way you can use a Bayern-Ticket for each day at 26€ for 2 people. I assume you are flying out of Munich. You might go from Prague to Munich, as low as 29€/person by express bus or about 46€ for 2 by train with Czech Rail tickets from Prague to Furth im Wald (~10€/person) and a Bayern-Ticket (€26, online from the Bahn) and base there. From Munich you can make day trips to Passau and Salzburg using Bayern-Tickets.

Unless you have already locked in reservations, you might consider going first from Prague to Passau. It's more on the way to either Munich or Salzburg. You can take the regional train, EX/ALX, from Prague to Regensburg, again, using a Czech Rail ticket for about 10€/person, to Furth im Wald, and a Bayern-Ticket after that. From Regensburg, you can go by regional trains via Plattling using the same Bayern-Ticket. Up_date: If you can count on the day you will be going from Prague to Germany, then, when you are in Berlin, you can purchase a Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket (from an automat for 29,50€ for 2 P, 2€ more from a counter). It will be valid for the EX/ALX from Pilsen to anywhere in Bavaria. Then you will just need to purchase in Prague Czech Rail tickets from Prague to Pilsen for about 5€/P (in Koruna). That will save you a few Euro and also solve the inconsistency that the Bayern-Ticket becomes valid at the German border, but you probably have to buy the Czech Rail ticket to the first stop in Germany, not the border.

Lee and Agnes, I haven't set anything in stone yet. I will consider your recommendations. They are very helpful.

Hi, Poland is part of the Eurail Pass system but not included in the Global Pass, which is one big disadvantage to getting that Pass. There's the German-Poland Pass and one other Pass which includes Poland. You have only one ride in Poland, which is from Warsaw to Frankfurt an der Oder. That leg should be covered by a point to point ticket. Train tickets in Poland pretty inexpensive relative to countries in Western Europe. There is a 15% discount on the cost of a Pass when two persons are traveling together. Given your intinerary I myself would get the Austria-German Pass 2nd class.
