Is there a direct train from Naples to Matera, Italy? We would love to spend at least a day there, on our way to Rome. We will have luggage with us. I have read that the trip from Naples involves going to Bari first. Can you give me the correct information and best way to go from Naples by public transportation. Thanks so much!
Therese
First I presume you know that Matera is not between Naples and Rome, but rather it's on the opposite direction (south east of Naples).
There are no direct trains. You would need to go from Naples to Caserta, then from Caserta to Bari, then in Bari, you can take the FAL (Ferrovie Appulo Lucane) train to Matera. It might be faster to go via Potenza. But the faster of all is forget the train and drive a car. Three hours and you are there. Second fastest is to go by bus from Naples to Matera directly with Marino bus. Over 4 hrs trip (departures from NAPOLI Metropark Staz.FS Terminalbus at 2pm and at 5pm).
Therese, There are no direct trains form Naples to Matera. You'll have to change to a smaller local railway in Bari for that trip. The first stage is to travel from Napoli Centrale to Bari Centrale. After arrival there, walk outside to the left to reach the FAL station. If you don't see it, ask someone. There you'll board the Ferrovie Apullo Lucane railway for the ~1.5 hour trip to Matera Centrale. DON'T forget to validate your tickets! Are you planning to stay in the Sassi area? If you haven't booked a hotel yet, I'd highly recommend Hotel Sassi (incredible views over the old town, especially at night). You can take a Bus or Taxi from the station to that area, but once you arrive in the Sassi you'll mostly be getting around a piedi (on foot). Buon Viaggio!
