Transportation to Cadaques

My daughter and I are taking a side trip to Cadaques from Barcelona and I'm trying to figure out the best way to get there. Options appear to be Sarba bus, train to Figueres or car rental from Barcelona. The real sticking point is if we take the train to Figueres to see the Dali Museum first -- what's the best way to complete the trip to Cadaques? Car rental from Figueres seem to be available for one week only -- we just need a car for overnight and the buses are 2 and 6 hours apart so if you miss one, there's a lot of wasted time. There is a bus from Barcelona to Cadaques if we opt to just miss the Dali Museum altogether. Although I typically like to plan ahead - I'm wondering whether we should just wait until we get to Barcelona, find a travel agent there and then figure it out. Also, if I rent a car in Barcelona -- how's the driving in Spain? Anyone done that particular route -- i.e., Barcelona to Figueres to Cadaques. If I were with another adult, I'd probably chose the car rental but traveling solo with a teenager -- public transport seems the better idea. Thanks.

Wow! We are planning the same trip in June. I have researched the transportation and have decided to rent a car in Barcelona. We decided to spend the night in Cadaques. It really seems impossible to see both the Dali Museum & House in one day. However, I did read that you can get a taxi from Figueres to Cadaques for about 50 euros. That might be an option for you.
Good Luck,

Alison,

In 2000, I drove with my 16 year old daughter from Barcelona to Salamanca, via the north of Spain, through Besalu. We didn't go the route you intend, but I wanted to let you know that you should be able to rent a car in Barcelona, through AAA, for less than a week.

Driving through Barcelona was a challenge; my daughter was navigator. Once we cleared the city, the roads were fine.

I am currently researching taking the seabus from Barcelona up the Costa Brava to Cadaques. You'd have to consider how to travel to Figueres from Cadaques, but the seabus at least to Cadaques, sounds like a good option.

Good luck!

Alison, I recently did this exact trip. I wouldn't consider anything other than a quick cheap train ride to Figueres. Then, at the train station rent a car from one of the numerous agencies right in front of you. I was there September(peak season) and every agency had many available cars, all available for one day if needed. Leave the car parked where it is until you are done at the museum. Then drive to Cadaques. You can easily drive to, and see the Dali house the same day. We did a trip down the coast back to Barcelona and returned the car there. The fee to drop off the car in Barcelona rather than Figueres was ten euros. Car rental was very reasonable.

Thanks to everyone who has responded. We took our trip at the end of March but weren't able to do the Figures part of the trip. We plan to return at some point -- so I still appreciate the info. everyone has provided. Thanks again.
