Transportation Suggestions for the best route to Rothenburg

We are staying in Haguenau above Strasbourg France and have some extra time, I want to explore a bit of Germany. I'd like to see the Rothenburg area. We don't have time to do the Romantic Road tour but would like to see what we can. Any suggestions on the best way to travel there? We have a rail pass and also will have a rental car during our stay. My first time to Europe would appreciate some suggestions.

Lili Ann,

It would help to know how much time you have for the visit to Rothenburg?

As you have a Railpass, you might consider getting to Rothenburg by train, as it's likely that will be faster than by rental car. I checked the route from Strasbourg and the shortest travel time I could find was 5H:04M, with 3 changes in Stuttgart, Ansbach and Steinach. Reservations compulsory for 2 of the trains, which you must pay separately as they're not included in the Railpass.

I'd recommend staying at least one night in Rothenburg. Be sure to take the Night Watchman's tour as it's very entertaining!

As this is your first trip to Europe, I'd highly recommend reading Europe Through The Back Door (2010 edition now available & on sale!). Pay particular attention to the "Rail Skills" section. You could also download the free PDF Rail Guide from this website (click the "Railpasses" tab at the top of the page, and then the link in the lower right corner).

Happy travels!

I probably wouldn't use a railpass if you have a rental car option.

I've driven and trained to Rhotenburg. As I recall, it was a local train that dropped me a good ten minute walk into town. Local trains are cheap. If you are using them, don't waste a day on your railpass.

The second visit, I drove. The Romantic Road is more convenient by car (but doable by train). I parked just outside the walls and walked in.

Plan on a night there. The town is nice but very touristy during summer days. The crowd drops off a lot at night and early morning so you can enjoy it more. We all enjoyed the Nightwatchman's tour.
