I will be in Turkey in the fall & since my time is limited, I want to know the best way to get around efficiently. I will arrive in Istanbul & would like to travel east. I only have 1 wk!
Where east? "Most efficient" may depend on where you're going. There are some cheap flights (try Onur Air). There is a good night train from Istanbul to Ankara, and some trains to other places - see http://seat61.com/Turkey2.htm - there are lots of buses, there are rental cars. I would recommend getting hold of Lonely Planet "Turkey" - it's good on logistics.
Turkey is a large country, and the areas of tourism are spread over a large area. The logistics of travel will cut in to your sight-seeing time. With one week, you could easily spend the entire time in Istanbul, seeing an incredible variety of attractions. Or, you could shorten the time in Istanbul and add a visit to one maybe two other places. Buses go practically everywhere, are fairly inexpensive, but take time. Planes are faster, but more expensive, and only get you close. Rentals cars provide the most flexibility, but can be expensive. You'll have to choose your destinations before determining the best way to travel between them.
We used Lonely Planet as Kathy and Lamont suggested when we were planning our trip to Turkey. We also found some good info on this site: http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/ It's not clear whether you have one week for your entire trip or on week to travel west. If you only have one week total, you could easily spend it only in Istanbul. There is so much to do!
