After 4 days in Rome (1 day business and then 3 days exploring), we plan to wander through the hill towns N. of Rome for 3 days. Is it best to rent a car? And are lodging reservations recommended, or can we wing it and reserve as we go? Thanks!
A car is definitely best for that area as many towns are only served bus or not at all. Also if you want to stop at any wineries they are not served by publin transit. As far as reservations go it would depend on the time of year you are going - if during high season you might consider reservations as you choices may be very limited or non existant.
Visiting Hill Towns March 29-31. Soon!
Just take the regional train up to Orvieto. The Hertz office is across the street from the train station. It's an easy drive up to the Siena area and many hill towns. Don't forget to visit Orvieto while you're there. It's a great little city. You may can rent a car thru AutoEurope.com for less than Hertz. You can pull both companies online. AutoEurope is a consolidated located in New England, and you'll often get a Hertz car when renting thru them. Often there is no drop off charge in Italy if you're not returning to Rome. If you had a laptop or netbook, you could reserve rooms as you go if you could get into a WiFi hookup. Otherwise, I suggest Booking.com.
Virtually every farm in Tuscany has apartments or rooms as secondary income. I'm talking hundreds and hundreds of places to stay.
