transportation from Southampton to Portsmouth

Will be arriving in Southampton via Queen Mary 2 and then would like transportation to Portsmouth or actually to Bayoux(?) or Caen in Normandy. The ship arrives on Oct. 30 at 0600 am.

Southampton to Portsmouth is only about 20 miles. The usual way would be by train. There are four trains an hour, two of them direct, and journey time is between 40 minutes and one hour. See National Rail (www.nationalrail.co.uk) for details. You can buy your tickets on the day at a cost of £8.70 each. However, if you are actually going from Southampton Docks to the Ferry Terminal in Portsmouth, and have lots of bags, then it might be easier to get a taxi. Google for the names of companies and ask for quotes.

Brittany Ferries make the Portsmouth to Caen run. It takes about seven hours. From the Caen ferryport, it's a bus to Caen and then a train to Bayeux.

I have no idea how long it will take you to get off the ship, but unless you somehow can manage to catch the 06:53 train that arrives in Portsmouth at 07:45, you won't be able to catch the 08:15 ferry to Caen. The next ferry leaves at 14:45.

Taking a taxi as Bob suggested would be faster than the train, but unless you are among the first people to get off the ship, you still may not make it to Portsmouth in time to catch the 08:15 ferry. I imagine you will be competing with lots of other people who will want taxi service somewhere.

If you catch the pm ferry, that'll put you into the Caen ferryport around 2130. You'll have to get off the boat and over t the bus which won't leave immediately. It's a twenty-minute ride or so up to the Caen train station where the last train to Bayeux leaves at 2245. After that it's six the next morning. It'll be really tight. If you're thinking about getting a car in Caen, you might want to check if anything will be open that late. The car places are just across the street from the train station.

If you end up taking the afternoon ferry and don't make it to Caen in time for the last train of the day to Bayeux, you certainly can take a taxi. It's a very short ride.
