We are arriving at FCO on June 4 and need to get to Siena. What is the best way to go -- train to Rome and then bus to Siena or train all the way?
The train station is a little bit of a walk uphill to Siena. I have only been there on a Sunday so I am not sure if they have cabs or microbuses to drive yo up the hill. Your best bet would be to look and see where the bus station and train station are in relation to your accommodations. And then consider your physical fitness/willingness to walk vs cost of other transportation. Goodluck!
There is bus transportation between the Siena train station (which is at the bottom of the hill below the tourist area of Siena) and the bus station (which is at the top of the hill). The "best" way depends on your schedule. Do a comparison of bus and train schedules. Just Google Trenitalia and SITA.
Two basic ways. 1) Trenitalia train. You will change trains in Chiusi. As mentioned above, the train station is down the hill a bit. There are buses up to the city wall. There area also taxis. 2) SENA bus. This bus departs from a depot across the street from the Rome-Tiburtina train station. Takes about 3hrs. No toilet on board but they do make a toilet stop after 2hrs. The bus does take you right up to the city wall. The third option could be a rental car. If you will be in Tuscany for a few days, it works. Best place to rent the car is Orvieto which is 1hr north of Rome on the train.
