Transportation from Rome to Munich

It looks like the best way for two of us to get to Munich from Rome is a night train. Twelve hours 7 pm to 7 am - about $300 each for a private sleeper car. Is there an easier way?

You're looking at an economy double on that train, for about €200 per, right. If you book in advance, online from the Bahn, you could get that same compartment for €99 per person with an Europa-Spezial fare. Right now I can see that fare for July 27. There are also four ECs going from Verona to Munich. With advance purchase the fare on the EC alone could be as low as €39 per. You would still need to go from Rome to Verona by Italian Eurostar (EC*), 2nd class mini fare, €56 per. The entire day trip is about 9-10 hrs.

We decided to take the day train, and we are glad we did as the scenery between places was so beautiful. We had 3 of the 4 of us who are over 6 feet tall and didn't like the idea of the train stopping as frequently during the night, so we took the day train instead. Good traveling :)

check out Airberlin;can't say what the fare would be as you didn't say when. I would take them over a night train any day.

Bebe, That's a LONG trip by train, whether during the day or at night. In that situation, I normally use a budget flight or find an intermediate location to stop for one night to "break up" the overall journey. In this case Verona would be a good possibility. I believe Air Berlin, GermanWings & Lufthansa all have flights from Rome to Munich. You'll have to check their respective websites to get information on the rates and flight times.

OK, I am rethinking a night train. I had looked at Lufthansa and a one way ticket was $900. I see an Airberlin ticket for about $100. A 12:45 flight - 4 hours. Is this a decent airline? Am I missing something because the two fares are so different? I need to get to Munich on Tuesday, Sept. 27 or Wednesday morning, the 28th.

It doesn't take four hours (flight time) from Rome to Munich, but AirBerlin has a stopover in Vienna, so Rome Fiumicino to Munich Stauss is four hours. The Leonardo Express runs ever 30 min from Rome Termini to Fiumicino. With the timing, if you don't leave Termini two hrs before your flight time, you won't have an hour for checkin, security, etc. When you get to Munich, it's probably going to take you 20 min to get off the plane, walk to the S-bahn station, buy a ticket, and be on a train to town. The S-Bahn take 40 min. The S-Bahn runs every 10 min (aver) and it doesn't matter which route. Just take the next one leaving. It will take over an hour from the time you get off the plane until you are in Munich Hbf. So, you see, the four hour flight is really at least 7 hours. The 9:05 ES*/EC connection takes 9h20m from Rome Termini to Munich Hbf and without the airport hassle. BTW, GermanWings flies via Köln, airport to airport in 7 hours. So, they are actually going to take as long as the train.
