Transportation from Rome to Amalfi in July

I am flying from JFK into Rome in mid July and then immediately heading to meet people in Amalfi. My flight lands at 7:00a.m. (on Sunday) and would like to get down to Amalfi as soon as possible. What are the quickest modes of transport? Also, on the return trip my flight leaves out of Rome at 10:00a.m. (on Saturday). I have been trying to find early morning transportation (train/bus) out of Naples or Salerno and seems everything starts later. Anyone have any idea or do I need to leave the night prior? Thanks in advance for all help.

Elisabeth, you are looking at a 4.5hr.-5.0hr. journey from Amalfi to Rome FCO. The bus service out of Amalfi doesn't start until 5:30 on a Saturday. I would suggest staying near the airport the night before. Here's a comment from Greg from Kentwood, MI on staying near the airport.

"If your looking for a clean bed, with a no frills hotel then try either the Mach 2 Hotel or the Cancelli Rossi Hotel. They are both near FCO, less than 2 miles, they both have shuttle service to FCO and the rates are a little over 100 euro per night. I stayed at both hotels and either is fine, although the Mach 2 is my preference. Both Hotels have a three star rating. Good Luck "

Thanks Larry, you just solidified my plans to return to Rome the night before I fly out. I will definitely look into the 2 hotels you listed as well. Much thanks.

I would leave the night before. According to the posts on the site, that flight time is way to ealy to try to be coming from the Amalfi Coast beforehand that same morning. My flight home to the US (in June) leaves at 11am and I am leaving Amalfi the day before just to get back to rome, and then getting up early the next am.
For on the way to amalfi, I just bought a ticket from Rome to Salerno last week on italiarail.com and then plan to take the SITA bus line to amalfi. Italiarail.com sent my tickets fed ex and they arrived so quickly and were wonderful to work with!

You can take a Trenitalia train from Rome to Naples, go to the lower level of the Napoli Centrale station, take the private Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, and take a SITA bus to Amalfi. Or you can take Trenitalia trains from Rome to Salerno and a SITA bus from Salerno to Amalfi.
